Its recently completed a major transformation, taking it’s inefficient heating system that hasn’t changed much over the past century and fully updating it with the most cutting edge and innovative equipment available. The installation of the Daikin AURORA inverter heat pumps throughout the building, provide the residents with increased comfort and control while reducing the cost to heat the building and reducing the buildings environmental impact.
Buildings are a main contributor of greenhouse gas emissions. Nationwide across the U.S., buildings are responsible for approximately 40% of greenhouse gas emissions. While in dense urban areas like New York City, they can be responsible for more than 70% of greenhouse gas emissions. Decarbonizing a building’s space heating system is a key strategy to significantly reducing a buildings emission while providing many other benefits.
The Daikin AURORA ductless heat pumps were the ideal solution to provide year-round comfort for the cold-climate experienced in New York City, as they provide up to 100% heating capacity at 5F and operate efficiently as low as -13°F ambient temperature.
Contact UsDaikin Multi-zone ductless heat pumps were easily insalled into each unit in this 10-unit multifamily building. Ten systems were installed in total: one for each residece. Each system is comprised of an outdoor unit that is then connected to three or four ductless indoor units by small refrigerant piping. If you look closely at the floor, you can see there used to be an old cast-iron radiator in the location where a new ductless inddor unit for the heat pump is located.
Daikin ductless technology is the perfect solution for a building like this, as:
Through a collaborative effort of key stakeholders, including the New York State Research & Development Authority, Cornell University, Taitem Engineering, and the residents of the building, more than 100 sensors were installed to closely measure and verify the impact of installing inverter-driven heat pumps in this building

Consistent & Quick Heat
There's just no comparison, because of its consistency. It heats very quickly in the morning. My whole apartment is always at a comfortable temperature. It's a no brainer!
Customized Comfort
For the first time, I have control over the temperature in my living space and its great. I can set it to different temperatures in different rooms. The air feels really nice. I really love them.
Ease of Installation
I was surprised to discover the heat pumps can be installed with a minimum of disturbance to the building. We gained an entirely new heating and cooling system, and the process was efficient.
There are tens of thousands of buildings similar to this one throughout dense urban cities in the Northeast United States. Being built eighty or more years ago, means these buildings may only have hydronic heating from a bolier - which can be inefficient and uncomfortable while also unable to provide cooling during the warm summer months.
According to Urban Green Council, "the best heat pump conversion targets are owner-occupied buildings with one-pipe steam heat systems that use expensive fuels."* When these buildings use fuel oil for their boiler or electric resistance heating, there is often a significant cost savings by switching to efficient inverter-driven air source heat pumps.

In addition to the energy cost savings, oftern an even more valuable component to the residents can be the comfort benefits. Ductless heat pumps allow residents to customize their comfort and enable multiple thermal zones per residence. For example, the building in New York City had one boiler which treated the entire building as one thermal zone. With the installation of ten air-source heat pump system, the building now has over 30 zones for both heating and cooling.
For Extreme Weather Conditions
Up to 100% heating capacity at 5°F (-15°C) and operate efficiently as low as -13°F ambient temperature.
Powerful Operation
Pushing the POWERFUL button on the remote control gives you a boost in cooling or heating power for a 20-minute period.
Comfort mode adjusts the direction and airflow rate so that the air from the unit does not blow directly on the occupants of the room.
As the World's No.1 indoor comfort solutions company, we know that the air we share is the only air we have. That's why we're on a mission to change the way people think about making the air in their homes more comfortable. We create next-generation heat pump HVAC and air quality systems with technology that helps reduce our carbon footprint and the world's reliance on fossil fuels.
Daikin aims to achieve carbon neutrlity by 2050 by reducing greenhouse gas emissions throughout the product lifecycle. We set the target in our strategic management plan, Fusion 25, to reduce our company's net CO2 emissions by 30% or more in 2025 and 50% or more by 2030, compared with emissions without measure with the base year set at 2019.
Based on FY21 figures (Daikin Group)
Reduction of net greenhouse gas emission throughout the entire life cycle compared to fiscal 2019
Greenhouse gas emission from manufacturing (development and production) compared to fiscal 2015
Sales volume of environmentally conscious products (residential air conditioners)

Many states and cities have created greenhouse gas emissions reduction commitments. The current strategy being pursued to achieve these targets is to convert end-uses from fossil fuels to electricity and then reduce the emissions of our electiricty generation by incorporating more renewable energy.
The largest end-use in our buildings that use fossil fuels is space heating. Since air source heat pumps enable the efficient use of electricity for heating, they are being looked at as a key technology to achieve long term climate goals.
Even with emissions associated with today's electricity generation, air source heat pumps reduce the greenhouse gas emissions associated with spaced heating when compared to the most prevalent heating system types in the US, including fuel oil, natural gas, propane, and electric resistance.
For decardes we have been using fossil fuel burning appliances to heat homes and buildings. These systems emit CO2 at the local level and contribute to global warming.
An all-electric Daikin Heat Pump can deliver all the comfort with less impact on the environment, and they can also allow you more control over the comfort of each room, without temperature swings.

Local Law 97 of 2019 places carbon emission limits on most buildings larger than 25,000 square feet. Starting in 2024, buildings that exceed their carbon limit may face fines and penalties. Over time, these carbon limits will become more stringent.

In 2021, the City of Boston updated their Building Emissions Reduction and Disclosure Ordinance. This building performance standard requires buildings larger than 20,000 square feet to meet specific emission targets starting in 2025.

In April 2020, the City of St. Louis became the first city in the midwest to pass a building performance standard. Starting in 2025, buildings larger than 50,000 square feet may face fines if they exceed their site energy use intensity target.
Daikin single and multi-zone systems offer built-in Air Intelligence that allows the control systems to make subtle and continuous adjustments to ensure you can stay comfortable at the touch of a button.
With innovative control solutions, such as the DKN North America App, you can control the temperature of your home from anywhere with an internet connection.
